I think there should be a new category in the descriptions on the home page for what constitutes a Bad Book–books that make you FEEL BAD.
I was given the non-fiction memoir ‘The Glass Castle’ by Jeannette Walls, a New York Times Bestseller, and was told that I would love it. I was enchanted from the start and could relate to so many of the experiences of the characters. (By the way, if a book is non-fiction are the people still called ‘characters’?)
The book was, very briefly, about growing up in an impoverished family infected with alchoholism. Not a happy subject, true, but I couldn’t put it down and I thought I was prepared for the impact it would have on me.
I did not finish the book (2/3 read). This is a great book and I’m sure that some day I will pick it up again because I feel great respect/love for the author. But right now I don’t want to feel bad.
An excellent book on many levels, this book made me feel bad so for now, to me, it is a Bad Book.

I’m back with a suggestion for another category–’Retractions’. I could only stay away from ‘The Glass Castle’ for two days, whether it made me feel bad or not. I finished the book in that one sitting and now believe it is one of the BEST BOOKS I’ve ever read. In reflection the book has affected me deeply and was a type of therapy that has lifted me at a core level.
‘The Glass Castle’ by Jeannette Walls is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone! (Even if it hurts…)
